Peppadew and Chive Scones

One of the most wonderfully quick, easy and oh so yummy recipes that I have come across in the blogosphere is  Celia’s recipe for scones and was inspired by her recent savoury version, and instantly knew I wanted to do something similar.  The variations are endless for these versatile tasty treats which make for a lovely lunch or weekend breakfast.  As nice as the peppadew and chive combination was, I keep wondering how much nicer they would be if I had to add cheese into the mixture.  Please let me know if you give them a try. 🙂

Peppadew and Chive Scones

Ingredients

3 cups self raising flour
5ml salt
45ml chives finely chopped
45ml chopped peppadews* (I used fresh from the garden)
1 cup cream
1 cup soda water

Butter, cheese and sweet chilli sauce to serve

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 190°C.
  2. Combine all the ingredients in a bowl until just combined.  The mixture will be quite sticky.
  3. Place the dough onto a floured surface.
  4. Dust your hands and the top of the dough with flour and gently shape the dough into a disk and with a floured cutter, cut out the scones, and place them on a lined baking sheet.
  5. Gently reshape the remaining dough and cut out more scones. I made a total of 12 scones.
  6. Alternatively shape the dough into a square and divide into 12 or 16 using a floured knife, separate gently and place onto a lined baking sheet.
  7. Bake for 15-20 minutes until a skewer inserted comes out clean.
Enjoy warm with butter, cheese and sweet chilli sauce.
*Peppadew is the brand name of sweet piquant peppers (a breed of capsicum baccaum) originally grown in the Limpopo province of South Africa – if you are unable to find these, you can replace them with any other sweet piquant peppers.

    • Sorry Celia, I should have put a description of what peppadews are. Would love to send you a few from the garden to plant in yours – with your and Pete’s green fingers, you would have a very healthy supply of fresh peppadews in no time. Have a happy week. 🙂

  1. I love savoury scones and now that I know what a peppadew is (thanks for that when I asked the question!) I think I could give these a go. And the cheese as an addition…think that would be fantastic as cheese and chives were made for each other 🙂

    • Hi Raymund, Peppadews is the brand name of sweet piquant peppers (a breed of capsicum baccaum) originally grown in the Limpopo province of South Africa – if you are unable to find these, you can replace them with any other sweet piquant peppers. Have a happy week. 🙂

  2. Scones were a winter staple at home. I will try this version for sure. And if Celia does not mind I might post the NZ version as a comparison for you. Onto the list with them! c

  3. I have never heard of peppadew before but I love the name and the sound of it. I saw where you said they are a version of piquant pepper so I will have to give this a try soon. We love our breads and a savory version of a scone is always a nice change

    • I think chilli flakes would be fabulous. I am sure you could use milk but it may change the texture slightly. Let me know how they turn out using if you make them with milk. Have a happy evening. 🙂

  4. Like others, peppadews are a new to me but I love your use of them in a savory scone. And I think your idea of adding cheese is a good one. Thanks for sharing, Mandy.

  5. I too had to look up what a peppadew is! I just love learning new things. These scones look amazing! And yes – I will likely add cheese if I make them. I love, love, love biscuits with cheese!

  6. I had to look up what a peppadew was as well! But now I know. 🙂 See, ya learn something new every day. These scones sound delicious. Great side dish.

    • Caroline, I feel really bad that I never originally put an explanation of what peppadews are in my post. Often when we know about something, we don’t give it a second thought that somebody across the globe might not know too. Have a happy week. 🙂

  8. Like everyone else! I think these sound amazing and must have a go at making some. I saw Peppadews in a jar in ASDA (UK supermarket) last week and they are also in some of our local ethnic shops (Turkish especially). Not the same as fresh, but should be OK if well drained. I had been hesitating before buying, waiting for a recipe to try. I have a jar on my shopping list now!
Here is the helpful Wikipedia Link for Peppadew peppers…

(Have added a link to this recipe at the end of my own Savoury Scone post so I don’t lose track of it – you should get a pingback.)

  9. Not too familiar with peppadew (thanks for the description!) but a huge fan of chives and savoury scones. Cheese would be a welcome addition too. Would they go with a cream cheese spread?

  10. I truly believe you guys in my blog family are going to make me eat more bread then I’ve ever eaten before lol. These scones look scrumptious. I will not go to the bread side.. lol. Or at least I will try not too lol.

  11. Since everyone was asking about what peppadew I don’t have to ask you anymore (I didn’t know it too). These scones look so delicious that I think it’d be popular in my house! Your instruction looks so easy too! Thanks for sharing the recipe.

    • Thanks Nami. These scones are super easy to make and the base recipe is the best I have ever come across – self raising flour, cream and a sparkling soda e.g. sprite or club soda and you have a winning combination every time and can add any number of yummy extras! Have a happy day. 🙂

  12. Wow! These would be amazing with butter, cheese and sweet chilli sauce! You’ve made my mouth water and I wish I had a batch in the oven right now! Jenny
