In My Kitchen – April 2012
Another month has rolled around which means it’s In My Kitchen time again.
In my kitchen…
Are the most beautiful red roses from our garden. Often people will ask me what roses they are and with my vast knowledge reply red roses – sadly, I couldn’t tell one rose from another.
In my kitchen…
Is my new mini spatula. I have never owned a small spatula so never realised until now, just how handy and useful they are. Might have to get another one.
In my kitchen…
Is a tortoise shell I found while out riding. I was fascinated to see how the shell had started peeling off until I was told that this little one was burnt in a fire and this is the reason for her outer shell casing to be falling off. It really saddens my heart to think how she must have suffered!
In my kitchen…
Is some edible glitter for sprinkling on top of cupcakes and the like. I have been searching high and low for it and finally found a few tubs in Johannesburg whilst visiting with my folks – I am sure to be sorry that I only bought one but since arriving back home have found out where I can source more here in PE when stock is available. I will post a few pics of some cupcakes sprinkled with this beautiful (fairy dust) soon.
In my kitchen…
Is ANOTHER little milk jug – I am such a sad case not being able to resist these little jugs. I found this whilst out shopping with my mom . It was close though, I nearly bought 2!
In my kitchen…
Is a piping bag I found at a very reasonable price. It works really well too. I just need to find better nozzles now – mine are a little “cheap and nasty”.
What’s in your kitchen this month? Please remember to link back to Celia’s blog Fig Jam and Lime Cordial if you partake in the fun.
Wah another month already! I am convinced that I will buy a small spatula. I actually have thought of getting one but I wasn’t 100% sure if it’s necessary. Now I know! Thanks Mandy! Love the milk jug!
The months do seem to be flying by Nami! I cannot believe how handy the mini spatula is, I seem to be using it more often than not. Have a happy week. 🙂
Those tortoise shell pieces…sighs…I felt my skin hurt while reading it.
Love your milk jug too 😉
Have a great week ahead!
Angie
Hi Angie, my heart was also very sore about the tortoise. Have a fantastic week too. 🙂
Your kitchen seems equivalent to an art museum – everything is so beautiful! And excuse me, edible glitter? My hero much? 😀
Cheers

Oh CCU, you are far too kind, thank you! Edible glitter is SO much fun! Have an awesome week ahead. 🙂
Hi Mands,
Loving the roses, spring has well and truly arrived in England bringing a mini heat wave (not quite like SA, but pretty good for England).
In the little somerset village where I live, we have wonderful cake shop filled with cake making and decorating goodies, including lots of edible glitter in a multitude of colour. I shall have to get the kiddies baking this school holiday.
xxxxAimeeXX
Hello darling Aimee, so lovely of you to leave a comment. 😀 As you head into Spring, we have been thrown into Winter – not my idea of fun. I would love to visit with you and go to your wonderful cake shop – we could bake cupcakes all day. 😀 I look forward to seeing your kiddies wonderful creations. Much love, xoxoxo
Another month already? Somebody slow 2012 down a bit! Well, at least we got another glimpse into your kitchen and, once again, Mandy, you didn’t disappoint. That poor tortoise didn’t stand a chance, did it? Your roses are beautiful and if someone persists, tell them they’re “Opening Night”, the “Chrysler Imperial”, or “Abraham Lincoln”. All 3 are beautiful red hybrid tea roses, just about as pretty as those in your photo. 🙂
I know John, this year really has been flying by! So much so that I was just getting used to summer and winter knocked on the door before I was ready! Well, let’s be honest, I am never ready for winter, but I digress… Thank you for your lovely compliment and I will memorise the names of the roses and sound very clever the next time somebody asks. Have a beautiful week. 🙂
I love using glitter on my cakes! Thanks for sharing this month Mandy 🙂
I have seen he most beautiful teeny tiny decorations in all shapes and colours too Tandy – it must be a dream for a mom to bake for her little ones birthday parties. Have a lovely day. 🙂
That photo of rose looks amazing, youre really working out that new camera!
Thanks Raymund. I am getting there slowly. I appreciate your lovely compliment. Have a super day. 🙂
Hello Mandy! Those roses are simply stunning… I can almost smell their sweet fragrance! Love the little white jug… I have a thing for white china too. I used to have a pet tortoise when I was a little girl… loved it to pieces. Thanks so much for allowing me to visit. And I see you are in South Africa?
Hi Lizzy, thank you for your lovely comment. Yip, we are in South Africa, in a small village called Sundays River in the Eastern Cape. Have a beautiful week. 🙂
Thanks for the peek into your kitchen 🙂
I love edible glitters – they bling up any cake! Have you visited some of the cake decorating websites to buy online (squireskitchen.com comes to mind)? There are plenty of online stores out there and there are so many different types of glitters and pretties these days! I have to limit myself as to how often I visit those sites…my willpower is always tested!
PS your roses are stunning 🙂
Hi Shelley, welcome and thanks for stopping by. Glitter definitely takes cakes and cupcakes to another magical level. Oh, I think it would be far too dangerous to let me out alone visiting online decorating sites although I might just have to quickly pop over to squireskitchen.com to have a squizz for research purposes… Have an awesome day. 🙂
That’s so sad about the tortoise. Are they able to grow another shell? I thought they only had one per lifetime. I love your roses and can’t believe they came from your garden. I bet they have an amazing perfume.
I know, the poor little tortoise – nope they are only “issued” with one shell so this little ones life ended in the fire. The “red” roses last for the longest time in a vase which is super awesome. Have a super day. 🙂
I also want a mini spatula. So handy. Actually my favorite tool in the kitchen is my long chopsticks for turning. I know i am, walking on the wild side.
Not fair, I don’t have long chopsticks for cooking with – wonder if the standard size ones will work – I must give it a try. Have a great day Bam. 🙂
Everything is beautiful – even that poor little tortoise´s shell 😦 Love the fairy dust, and the roses! I too have a collection of little white jugs. Funny thing is, I don´t take milk in my tea or coffee 😉
Thanks Tanya! I use my little jugs for all sorts of sauces and dressings, custards, even to mix cornstarch for thickening gravies. Have a beautiful week. 🙂
Hi, and thanks for the peek into your kitchen!
Your roses are beautiful and who cares about their name? Your photo is a work of art- it would be lovely framed.
I have several small spatulas and they are the ones I use most often- I particularly like the one with a very thin edge.
I have so many glitters and fancy decos and sugars that I can’t EVER let my husband know – I send them to my d-i-l and my grandsons have the most decorated cookies around! They are seriously addictive.
poor little tortoise- her shell is her memorial.
Hi Heidi, lovely of you stop by and thank you for your very kind words. Have a happy week. 🙂
oHhhhh, that turtle. Sad.
The roses are glorious.
And the edible GLITTER! Oh, My. I want some.
Where are your fur children? Don’t they hang out in the kitchen?
Have a good Monday, Mandy 🙂 Xxx
Hello dear Kim, would be awesome to post off some glitter to you to play with and to decorate your cakes and cookies. The fur children trip me on the way to the kitchen every morning for their breakfast and only seem to want to hang out when their is raw meat, chicken or fish in the vicinity. They are very punctual for their dinner at 16h30 every afternoon though and wait patiently at their food bowls for me to come and serve them their noms. Have an awesome Monday. 🙂 xo
~~~~Mandy,
My cats wait for me to awaken…. and purr & rub around my legs until they get their meowwww mix.
They also get whip cream in the morning, which they Looooove. But they will not eat the fake cream.
Is that funny or what? I so much adored the photos of your kitties.
Xxx Kisssessss
My babies usually wake me up by purring in my ear and kneading my shoulder – precious little things. Oh don’t tell my kitties about the whipped cream, mine only get milk and rarely a splash of cream. Have a beautiful day Kim. 🙂
I sooo enjoyed reading this!
Aah, thanks Pink! Have a beautiful week. 🙂
The roses are gorgeous!!!! And that turtle shell is fascinating. Such a sad story, but my children would have loved to see that.
Thanks Kristy – I am forever picking up the most peculiar things! Have a happy day. 🙂
😦 The tortoise shell breaks my heart. I have this thing about animals. When they are in pain, or hurt I lose it. Every time. 😦
But I do love this post. I just bought that same small spatula – what a gem it is too! Your roses are a great way to start my Monday, I know nothing about the types and kinds, just that they’re gorgeous and smell so good. 🙂
Have a great week! xoxo
Hi Sarah, you and me both – I am the WORST and I mean WORST when it comes to animals and seeing them in pain – it near killed me living in Mauritius for two and a half years – I won’t elaborate – too painful and heartbreaking! These little spatulas are awesome! I am pleased you are left with the thought of the roses from our garden. Have a beautiful week. 🙂
Those red roses are so gorgeous 🙂 I am so in love with roses 🙂
Thanks Tes! Have a super week. 🙂
Poor turtle! 😦 I hope you have a lovely week!
I know Jen, it’s so sad! Have a lovely week too. 🙂
What a great post – except the tortoise shell just breaks my heart. I don’t know how to explain it, but anytime I hear of or see an animal in pain or suffering I just lose it. It just breaks my heart.
I love that you just bought a little spatula too. Me too, and it’s quite handy! I wish I had purchased it a long time ago. I am in love with your pitcher!! SO CUTE!!!
Happy Monday!!!!!
oh i like those crystals and the turtle shell is so beautiful!
Hi Belle, thanks so much for your lovely comment. Have a super day. 🙂
did you get my last comment.I seem to be having problems. Anyway- love the turtle shell and i need those crystals for the cupcakes I am making today!
Hi Belle, yip, got your last comment – not sure what might be happening. Hope it is not on my side. 🙂 xo
Beautiful red roses and edible glitter, two things I wish were in my kitchen as well. Both would add color and sparkle to a gray day.
Would be brilliant if I could pop a few fresh cut roses and a tub of glitter your way Karen. Have a happy week. 🙂
What a mix of things you bought us this month – the beautiful roses and the sad shell of a tortoise
Hi Claire, must say it was quite a mixed bag this month. Have a super week. 🙂
I absolutely love those flowers. I think flowers just brighten the day completely. And that jug is absolutely beautiful. It reminds me of the old fashioned ones my grandmother had and my mother still has. Beautiful post
Hi Kay, thanks so much. I must say the jug shape did remind me of the wash stand jugs from eons ago. I love having fresh flowers in our home, even just one – brightens the whole house. Have a super day. 🙂
Oh, poor little tortoise! That IS sad…
Mandy, I’ve never used glitter on a cake before, so I can’t wait to see what it looks like! And I’m very impressed, that milk just is so elegant, I reckon I might well have bought two myself!
Your red roses are glorious! Thanks for playing! 🙂
Hi Celia, I will get cracking on some baking ASAP to showcase this beautiful glitter. Have a lovely week. 🙂
Great idea! Wouldn’t it be nice if we all shared some things “in my kitchen”
Would you mind?
I would love to see what you have in your kitchen every month – I bet you have loads of treasures to share. Have a super day. 🙂
Always a pleasure to see red roses. brighten up any room and put a smile on your face to start another day! x
Absolutely Yvette, I always have one rose in my bathroom and one in the kitchen. Have a beautiful day. 🙂 xo
Beautiful roses and not to sound morbid but the smoke inhalation probably got the little turtle first. Hate to see that though.
You are no doubt right Greg – very sad about the poor little tortoise! Much nicer to focus on the roses. Have a super day. 🙂
I can’t believe you actually have such perfect red roses growing like that in your yard, they look like the tea roses we only dream of. I plant them sometimes just for the summer in a pot and sadly say goodbye in the fall. They are truly a luxury up here in our cold climate! I love pixie dust too!! And I can’t wait to see what you get up to with it!! xo Smidge
I should find out what these beautiful roses are as they grow so well here and then plant more! Pixie dust, oh I love that, think that is what I shall call it from now on – of fairy dust maybe. Have a beautiful day Smidge. 🙂 xo
I’m a sucker for a milk jug also. It’s lovely.
Hi Misky, I really do have quite a collection of little jugs! Have a super day. 🙂
Lovely post, lovely kitchen 🙂
Thanks Giovanna! Have a super day. 🙂
Gorgeous roses, Mandy! Always fun to see what’s in your kitchen, though I, too, am sad thinking of that poor tortoise.
Hi Betsy, thanks very much. Have a lovely day. 🙂
I want a cupcake with fairy dust!
Come for tea and I will give you as many as you can fit in. Hope you had a happy evening out with my Petie. 🙂 ox
Come for tea and I will give you as many as you can fit in. Hope you had a happy evening out with my Petie. 🙂 xo
Awww, poor little turtle 😦
I liked your roses best – gorgeous!!
Hi Martha, thanks for finding time to stop by. Looking forward to reading E of your alphabet challenge. Have a lovely day. 🙂
You must have a green thumb to grow roses as perfect as those!! Gorgeous color! How fun to look around your kitchen; I’d fall in love with those jugs as well, so classic looking and I’m sure you can use them for so many things.
Not so sure about the green thumb Linda, just pure luck and a good variety of rose but I do appreciate your vote of confidence. 🙂
Edible glitter is now on the shopping list!
Greetings from north of the Arctic Circle.
Hi Barbara, welcome and thanks for stopping by. I want to bake everyday just so I can use this wonderful invention! It really transforms baked goods. Have an awesome day. 🙂
So many lovely treats in the kitchen at one time! Deliciousness (edible glitter–what a swell invention!), daintiness (my sister is a cream-pitcher addict, too, and I probably would be if I had the space to keep them . . . ), drama (poor little tortoise; at least you’ve honored her memory by respecting the beauty of her shell enough to preserve it), and the devastating glamor of red roses. Sir John’s notes on possible ID of them seem sound to me, but whatever they are, their beauty speaks for itself. 🙂
Kathryn, thank you for your beautiful kind and loving words. Have a beautiful week. 🙂 xo
I can almost smell the roses! Where did you get your little spatula from? I have a little frying pan and all my normal ones are too big for it.
I got the spatula from Spar – it was only R16.95! Needless to say, I bought a second one. Let me know if you can’t find one, I can always get you one here and post it to you. 🙂
Gorgeous roses. They must smell heavenly.
Thank you! They really are the most magnificent roses but sadly they don’t have a very strong scent. Have a super day. 🙂
