In My Kitchen – April 2012

Another month has rolled around which means it’s In My Kitchen time again.

In my kitchen…

Are the most beautiful red roses from our garden.  Often people will ask me what roses they are and with my vast knowledge reply red roses – sadly, I couldn’t tell one rose from another.

In my kitchen…

Is my new mini spatula.  I have never owned a small spatula so never realised until now, just how handy and useful they are.  Might have to get another one.

In my kitchen…

Is a tortoise shell I found while out riding.  I was fascinated to see how the shell had started peeling off until I was told that this little one was burnt in a fire and this is the reason for her outer shell casing to be falling off.  It really saddens my heart to think how she must have suffered!

In my kitchen…

Is some edible glitter for sprinkling on top of cupcakes and the like.  I have been searching high and low for it and finally found a few tubs in Johannesburg whilst visiting with my folks – I am sure to be sorry that I only bought one but since arriving back home have found out where I can source more here in PE when stock is available.  I will post a few pics of some cupcakes sprinkled with this beautiful (fairy dust) soon.

Is ANOTHER little milk jug – I am such a sad case not being able to resist these little jugs.  I found this whilst out shopping with my mom .  It was close though, I nearly bought 2!

In my kitchen…

Is a piping bag I found at a very reasonable price.  It works really well too.  I just need to find better nozzles now – mine are a little “cheap and nasty”.

  1. Wah another month already! I am convinced that I will buy a small spatula. I actually have thought of getting one but I wasn’t 100% sure if it’s necessary. Now I know! Thanks Mandy! Love the milk jug!

    Loving the roses, spring has well and truly arrived in England bringing a mini heat wave (not quite like SA, but pretty good for England).
    In the little somerset village where I live, we have wonderful cake shop filled with cake making and decorating goodies, including lots of edible glitter in a multitude of colour. I shall have to get the kiddies baking this school holiday.

  4. Another month already? Somebody slow 2012 down a bit! Well, at least we got another glimpse into your kitchen and, once again, Mandy, you didn’t disappoint. That poor tortoise didn’t stand a chance, did it? Your roses are beautiful and if someone persists, tell them they’re “Opening Night”, the “Chrysler Imperial”, or “Abraham Lincoln”. All 3 are beautiful red hybrid tea roses, just about as pretty as those in your photo. 🙂

    • I know John, this year really has been flying by! So much so that I was just getting used to summer and winter knocked on the door before I was ready! Well, let’s be honest, I am never ready for winter, but I digress… Thank you for your lovely compliment and I will memorise the names of the roses and sound very clever the next time somebody asks.   5. Hello Mandy! Those roses are simply stunning… I can almost smell their sweet fragrance! Love the little white jug… I have a thing for white china too. I used to have a pet tortoise when I was a little girl… loved it to pieces. Thanks so much for allowing me to visit. And I see you are in South Africa?

    I love edible glitters – they bling up any cake! Have you visited some of the cake decorating websites to buy online (squireskitchen.com comes to mind)? There are plenty of online stores out there and there are so many different types of glitters and pretties these days! I have to limit myself as to how often I visit those sites…my willpower is always tested!

Oh, I think it would be far too dangerous to let me out alone visiting online decorating sites although I might just have to quickly pop over to squireskitchen.com to have a squizz for research purposes… Have an awesome day. 🙂

  7. That’s so sad about the tortoise. Are they able to grow another shell? I thought they only had one per lifetime. I love your roses and can’t believe they came from your garden. I bet they have an amazing perfume.

    • I know, the poor little tortoise – nope they are only “issued” with one shell so this little ones life ended in the fire. The “red” roses last for the longest time in a vase which is super awesome. Have a super day. 🙂

    Your roses are beautiful and who cares about their name? Your photo is a work of art- it would be lovely framed.
    I have several small spatulas and they are the ones I use most often- I particularly like the one with a very thin edge.
    I have so many glitters and fancy decos and sugars that I can’t EVER let my husband know – I send them to my d-i-l and my grandsons have the most decorated cookies around! They are seriously addictive.

    • Hello dear Kim, would be awesome to post off some glitter to you to play with and to decorate your cakes and cookies. The fur children trip me on the way to the kitchen every morning for their breakfast and only seem to want to hang out when their is raw meat, chicken or fish in the vicinity. They are very punctual for their dinner at 16h30 every afternoon though and wait patiently at their food bowls for me to come and serve them their noms. Have an awesome Monday. 🙂 xo

        My cats wait for me to awaken…. and purr & rub around my legs until they get their meowwww mix.
        They also get whip cream in the morning, which they Looooove. But they will not eat the fake cream.

        • My babies usually wake me up by purring in my ear and kneading my shoulder – precious little things. Oh don’t tell my kitties about the whipped cream, mine only get milk and rarely a splash of cream. Have a beautiful day Kim. 🙂

  11. 😦 The tortoise shell breaks my heart. I have this thing about animals. When they are in pain, or hurt I lose it. Every time. 😦

    But I do love this post. I just bought that same small spatula – what a gem it is too! Your roses are a great way to start my Monday, I know nothing about the types and kinds, just that they’re gorgeous and smell so good. 🙂

    • Hi Sarah, you and me both – I am the WORST and I mean WORST when it comes to animals and seeing them in pain – it near killed me living in Mauritius for two and a half years – I won’t elaborate – too painful and heartbreaking!   12. What a great post – except the tortoise shell just breaks my heart. I don’t know how to explain it, but anytime I hear of or see an animal in pain or suffering I just lose it. It just breaks my heart.

    I love that you just bought a little spatula too. Me too, and it’s quite handy! I wish I had purchased it a long time ago. I am in love with your pitcher!! SO CUTE!!!

  14. I absolutely love those flowers. I think flowers just brighten the day completely. And that jug is absolutely beautiful. It reminds me of the old fashioned ones my grandmother had and my mother still has. Beautiful post

  16. I can’t believe you actually have such perfect red roses growing like that in your yard, they look like the tea roses we only dream of. I plant them sometimes just for the summer in a pot and sadly say goodbye in the fall. They are truly a luxury up here in our cold climate! I love pixie dust too!! And I can’t wait to see what you get up to with it!! xo Smidge

  17. You must have a green thumb to grow roses as perfect as those!! Gorgeous color! How fun to look around your kitchen; I’d fall in love with those jugs as well, so classic looking and I’m sure you can use them for so many things.

  18. So many lovely treats in the kitchen at one time! Deliciousness (edible glitter–what a swell invention!), daintiness (my sister is a cream-pitcher addict, too, and I probably would be if I had the space to keep them . . . ), drama (poor little tortoise; at least you’ve honored her memory by respecting the beauty of her shell enough to preserve it), and the devastating glamor of red roses. Sir John’s notes on possible ID of them seem sound to me, but whatever they are, their beauty speaks for itself. 🙂
