Pete and I ate copious amounts of wonderful naan while we were living in Mauritius. Sadly I cannot reproduce exactly what we ate then but this recipe comes close.
Naan Bread
Ingredients
7g active dry yeast
250ml warm water
60ml white sugar
45ml milk
1 egg beaten
10ml salt
± 4½ cups all purpose or bread flour
60ml butter melted
4 garlic cloves minced
Method
- Dissolve the yeast in the warm water and set aside for 10 minutes.
- Stir in the sugar, milk, egg, salt, and flour to make a soft dough.
- Knead for 8 to 10 minutes on a lightly floured surface until smooth. You may need to add more flour if the dough is too sticky.
- Place the dough in a well oiled bowl, cover and set aside to rise until the dough has doubled in volume.
- Punch down the dough and knead lightly. Pinch off small handfuls of dough the size of a golf balls and roll into balls and place on a tray, cover lightly and allow to rise until double in size.
- Roll one ball of dough into a long oval. Lightly oil a heated pan and cook the dough until puffy and lightly browned.
- Turn and brush the cooked side with butter and garlic and cook until browned.
- Continue until all the naan have been cooked.
Naan is dangerous for me and cannot just eat one – ha!
I agree Renee, I had far too many to count! Have a wonderful day. 🙂 xo
Looks good, I like mine a little thinner anyway:)
Hi Cheri, thanks for stopping by. I must say being thin, they were really scrumptious. Have a super day. 🙂 xo
I love naan bread, especially ones with garlic! It’s so delicious and perfect for dipping into heavy sauces. Thanks for sharing the recipe! 😀
hi Ada, I too thoroughly enjoy naan, although I really wish I could get it close to being like what we used to eat in Mauritius. Have a lovely day. 🙂 xo
Looks DeLish, Mandy!
How was your Easter, dear? XXxx what did you eat?
Thanks Kim! We had a wonderful Easter and enjoyed a few braai’s (barbecues), the last for the season before the weather is too cold to be outdoors and ate a few puddings including figs roasted in the oven with honey and brown sugar served with crème fraiche. Sadly no choc chip cookies though. Have a beautiful day dear and hope to hear about all your wonderful Easter meals. 🙂 xoxoxo
Garlic and butter…those flatbreads must be very delicious, Mandy.
They were very delicious thanks Angie. Have a wonderful day. 🙂 xo
There’s nothing quite like eating on holiday. Even if you could replicate the recipe exactly, your surroundings and state of mind wouldn’t be quite the same.
Think we will have to go back to Mauritius Bunny. Have a lovely day. 🙂 xo
We love Naan bread and it’s the highlight of a dinner out for me:) I’ve been thinking about making some myself.. these look fantastic! I watched them make them once at a festival and they used a clay pot and threw the dough on the inside wall of the oven to bake. xx
The traditional way to cook naan is in a tandoori oven. I would definitely invest in one if I could Smidge. Have a beautiful day. 🙂 xo
So brilliant that you made your own!
Thanks very much Tandy. Have a lovely day. 🙂 xo
I’ve been wanting to making naan for years! Might just give your recipe a go : )
This is a super easy recipe Lizzy and it is a lovely dough to work with. Have a lovely day. 🙂 xo

Choc Chip Uru
Aww, you are so sweet CCU, thank you! Have a beautiful day. 🙂 xo
Making naan seems like it would be a real challenge in a home kitchen, but yours look great.
Hi Mary, making naan really isn’t at all a problem in a home kitchen, except for not having a tandoori oven that is. Have a super day. 🙂 xo
Hi Mandy, I have never been able to make Naan as delicious as it is in India. It must be something to do with those lovely old tandoori ovens.
I agree Glenda, it definitely has something to do with the tandoori ovens. Have a super day. 🙂 xo
My curries will never be complete without these
I would love to see how you make your naan Raymund. Have a lovely day. 🙂 xo
I have never made this but having jsut come in from a girl’s night out (curry night!) I am now in the mood for giving this a go later in the week 🙂 You clever clogs you!
Clinkers to a good night out with the girls Tanya. Hope you get a chance to make these this week, I would love to hear how you enjoy them. Have a wonderful day. 🙂 xo
I need to give homemade naan a try. I just never have the time or patience and opt for the fast recipes – which admittedly aren’t very good. I know this would be worth the effort. It looks delicious!
This recipe really is worthwhile making Kristy. Maybe you and the family could incorporate it into one of your challenges. Have a lovely day. 🙂 xo
I’ve never tried naan bread but it looks wonderful. Since I wouldn’t know what it was supposed to look like, I think you rolled it out just fine.
Aww, you are very kind Diane, thank you! I just saw the pics of Nikki at the Boston Marathon. What a remarkable achievement, you must be so very proud of her. Have a super day. 🙂 xo
I cannot tell you how proud I am of that girl Mandy. She damaged her knee before mile 5 but pushed through the pain all the way to the finish. She was lucky to have her trainer and a good friend who is a nurse run with her the entire way.
Oh my goodness, I cannot believe Nikki ran all those long miles with a damaged knee! What a remarkable lady and how awesome to have such a wonderful support team. 🙂 xo
Garlic naan! Yum. I think your naan has turned out really well. Isn’t it a great bread! I love it and always order it every time we have Indian. I have only made it a few times though and often with mixed results xx
I would happily eat naan as the main and a curry as a side. Have a wonderful day Charlie. 🙂 xo
I love naan bread and have not yet tried to make it myself. I hope that I can give your recipe a try. Of course, I will have to slather it would butter and garlic, sounds delicious.
Bam, I bet you would make these way better than I can. Hope you get to giving them a try. Have a lovely day. 🙂 xo
I do enjoy naan, Mandy, though I’ve never made it for myself. It does seem easy enough and I bet the flavor is far better than any I’ve had. We’ll add this to the list of things you’ll make whilst your here. 😉
Deal! Can’t wait to be able to make these with you John. You will be very proud to hear that Pete took me on a 7.5km run yesterday. My first ever! It was wonderful. Hopefully will put it all in a post soon. Have a wonderful day. 🙂 xo
That is great news, Mandy!!!! You are really making some great progress and, yes, I am proud of you. Way to go!
Thanks John! xo
Naan = Yarm! 🙂
Hope you had a rippa Easter sweets. Hugs from Oz. xx
It was a wonderful family full Easter Anna. Love back to you from a very wet and somewhat cold SA. 🙂 xo
Your naan bread looks perfect and must have been good for wiping out the bowl of dahl you enjoyed with it.
They were perfectly matched Karen. Have a beautiful weekend. 🙂 xo
A timely reminder to make some naan – so satisfying 🙂
