Addo National Elephant Park

We are loving being able to pop into the park on a whim, especially now that we have registered for our Wild Card which gives us unlimited access to over 80 parks and reserves  in South Africa.

We have tried to find the 3 lion cubs but alas, it seems they are spotted the day before or the day after we have been into the park.  There may be more cups in December.  We were however graced with the presence of a lion and had him all to ourselves for a good 30 minutes.

I believe a lioness gave him his scars.  Poor boy.

I love his two tone mane.

He kept calling his mate, sadly she was nowhere to be seen though.  His call echoed and vibrated through the air and carried far and wide.  It is amazing how loud and deep his call is.  It was an incredible experience to hear it.Addo October 2014 6

He made sure to mark a bush just in case anybody wanted to come into his territory uninvited.Addo October 20

Poor boy was exhausted after all the calling and marking so had a wee rest at a watering hole.Addo October 2014 5

Addo October 2014 1

There are loads of baby elephants and we spotted a couple of little fellows who were no more than a couple of days old.

Staying safe near mom.

I didn’t notice the little guy on the right while I was taking this photo of another ellie having a drink – funny little thing.

It was lovely to see jackal after so many were poisoned a while back.Addo October 2014 16

Addo October 2014 12

Not sure what the kill is but they were having a wonderful breakfast all the while wagging their tails non stop.

A little afternoon grooming.

Settling in for an afternoon nap.

A young kudu bull with his new horns.

Addo Sep 2014 59

Can you spot the hole in his right ear. Wonder if he went through a rebellious stage and pieced his ear after his parents said no.

Addo October 2014 2

This caracal graciously sat still for me to get a quick photo before heading off into the thick of the bush.

Addo Sep 2014 74

It was lovely to watch this new family. They were very relaxed and not at all perturbed by our presence.

Addo Sep 2014 76

The baby still has a fuzzy coat, not all smooth like his mommy and daddy yet.

Addo Sep 2014 82

This little fellow was lighting fast to cross the road to chomp on some grass.

Addo Sep 2014 96

Mr Ostrich was also enjoying a grassy snack.

Addo Sep 2014 107

I wonder if buffalo can get a cold because this guy hat a lot of snot flying about.

Addo Sep 2014 128

This starling has the most brilliant yellow eye and beautiful shiny peacock coloured feathers.

I tried to capture this guy shaking off his dust bath.

I’m sure this Franklin was trying to play chicken with us.

Addo Sep 2014 197

I love the colouring on red hartebeest. Both male and females have horns unlike kudu where only the males have horns.

Addo October 222

Fascinating horns and leaf like stripes in pointy ears

Now, if we could just spot leopard, rhino and hyena…

  1. Mandy, oh my goodness, what an AMAZING post! Thank you so much for sharing all these astonishing photos with us! I hope this isn’t too stupid a question – do the animals in these parks get fed, or do they fend for themselves? I’m just wondering what the odds are of being eaten while you’re taking photos.. 😉

    • Thanks Celia! No such thing as a stupid question – no, all the animals fend for themselves – the only portion of the wild that is affected is the fence around it all for us humans to enjoy. It really is the most incredible experience – one I would love to share with you all in person. Have a super day. 🙂 xo

  2. What beautiful pictures! They brought back memories of a wonderful trip I did two years ago with someone who is a complete ellie obsessive. She was in heaven, as you can imagine. I will be back in SA in January. Very tempted…..

  3. Wow, Mandy, how extraordinary.. I am so envious of you being able to just POP on and see these wondrous animals.. I actually think I would have trouble leaving such a place.. great shots.. thank you.. c

    • We have the same problem C and we can go in 365 days a year if we like – having the southern gate only 3km from our home makes it incredibly easy. Have a wonderful and happy farmy day. 🙂 xo

  4. My heart is beating faster. My palms are sweating from excitement.
This is what my heaven will be like, Mandy! YES, This.
The lion looks like a GOD. Majestic. Amazing. Unbelievable.
Are you driving thru here? Are they behind a fence?
One day when I meet you, This is the place I want to spend the WHOLE day 🙂 Xxxxxxxx

    • Darling Kim thank you so much for enjoying this post so much. We are in our car but the are no fences between us and the animals – they are 100% in their natural environment and honour us with their presence. We can spend the whole day, and day after day when you visit. Reckon this is the perfect time to visit too – seems we see so much this time of year. Oh how I wish I could count down days before you could come and visit – one day, I can feel it. Have a beautiful love filled happy day. 🙂 xoxoxo

  5. You don’t know how jealous I am that you got to see a baby elephant. Stunning photos. Thank you for sharing. Takes me back to our happy memories of safari in South Africa last year. I did see elephants which was a dream come true but sadly no baby ones. Emma xx

  6. Oh my god Mandy these are absolutely incredible photos – and only 3km from your home! Big Man and I have been looking at them together for the last half hour trying to decide which animals we like best. All of them (although Mr Lion and the baby elephant might edge to the top of my list!). Amazing – thank you so much for sharing these with us…you lucky, lucky lady!

    • Aww, Tanya, thank you! What a lovely compliment! We went back yesterday and were graced with the presence of a lion and lioness – can’t wait to share a few more shots with you all. Have a beautiful day. 🙂 xo

  7. Thanks for the tour. So wish I could have been there with you. That lion is so majestic, the elephant family is gorgeous and I love the baby zebra. How fortunate you are to have all of this at your back door xx

    • We are extremely grateful to be able to enjoy a morning on a whim like we do when Pete is home. I would love to take you for a drive through the park – maybe one day Charlie. Have a wonderful weekend ahead. 🙂 xo

  8. Oooo Mmmmm G! I am practically buzzing from the excitement to think that in less than a year I will be seeing you, and all the awesome that happens in your backyard. I can’t believe you have easy access to this too. Ahhhhh! Soooo cool! Do you think we will be able to see Meerkats? LOL!

    • Isn’t it awesome! Hmm, I have been trying to spot a meerkat for you but alas! At lease I have a few more sleeps ahead to spot them before you get here so we will know where to look. 😀 Can’t wait until we can really starting counting the sleeps down! Have a wonderful and happy day. 🙂 xoxoxo

  9. Wonderful photos. I love seeing these awesome creatures in the wild.
Sometimes our goats will somehow impale their own ear with one of their horns. Maybe that’s what caused the hole.

    • Thanks Bill! Nothing beats seeing animals in their natural environment. Good thinking about getting a hole in the ear – might even have been administered by a fellow buck. Have a super day. 🙂 xo

  10. Ooh, I love the safari-like tour you just brought us to! I would love to see cubs, too. And the baby elephants are just one of the cutest things on earth!

  11. What superb photos of all those gorgeous animals, my sweet! I am with all of the others who have expressed longing to see such beauties—never mind have them as virtual next door neighbors!! What a joy. I suspect I’d not only have bought that Wild Card pass you have but possibly applied to be one of the fortunate beasties living right in the park, too. THANK you for sharing your tour with us. I can never get enough of such glorious natural beauty, and am thrilled that you ‘took us along’. Happy December, already! With much love and many big (((HUGS))),
